Theory of Magnetic Monopoles and Electric-Magnetic Duality: A Prelude to S-Duality

چکیده
Charges are often called the coupling constants because their strength determines the coupling, or interaction, strength with the corresponding fields. As we shall see shortly in greater detail, there is a striking symmetry between electric and magnetic fields in our description of electromagnetism. That is, the equations governing the dynamics of the electric and magnetic fields are unchanged when the fields are exchanged. For example, the energy density of electromagnetic fields3 is

Supersymmetric duality in superloop space
In this paper we constructed superloop space duality for a four dimensional supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory with N = 1 supersymmetry. This duality reduces to the ordinary loop space duality for the ordinary Yang–Mills theory. It also reduces to the Hodge duality for an abelian gauge theory. Furthermore, the electric charges, which are the sources in the original theory, appear as monopoles in ...
متن کاملPath Integral Quantization of Dual Abelian Gauge Theory
The path integral for 3+1 abelian gauge theory is rewritten in terms of a real antisymmetric field allowing a dual action that couples the electric and magnetic currents to the photon and each other in a gauge invariant manner. Standard perturbative abelian quantum electrodynamics reemerges when the monopole current vanishes. For certain simple relationships between the monopole current and the...
متن کاملRegular magnetic black holes and monopoles from nonlinear electrodynamics
It is shown that general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) with the Lagrangian L(F ) , F = FμνF μν having a correct weak field limit, leads to nontrivial spherically symmetric solutions with a globally regular metric if and only if the electric charge is zero and L(F ) tends to a finite limit as F →∞ . Properties and examples of such solutions, which include magnetic black h...
متن کاملMonopole-Particle Duality at Strong Electric Coupling
We consider the gauge interactions between non-Abelian magnetic monopoles at strong electric coupling. By drawing an analogy between the gauge freedom of an electric particle at weak electric coupling and that of a monopole at strong electric coupling we motivate that these monopoles interact under a magnetic copy of the residual symmetry group. This differs from the interactions of monopoles a...
متن کاملMagnetic Monopoles, Duality, and Supersymmetry
These notes present a pedagogical introduction to magnetic monopoles and exact electromagnetic duality in supersymmetric gauge theories. They are based on lectures given at the 1995 Trieste Summer School in High Energy Physics and Cosmology and at the 1995 Busstepp Summer School at Cosener’s House.
